What Is the Avalon Quarterly

The Avalon Quarterly publishes nonfiction, fiction, and poetry answering the most pressing questions of the past 10,000 years. Each issue is a contemplation of a different aspect or quality of the human condition. We practice not detached analysis but philosophy as a living vocation. In this spirit, we publish lively prose that harmonizes conceptual clarity with artistic force.

Why Should You Write for Us

If you write with us, your work will be published in our carefully crafted magazine. You’ll have a physical, tactile, and beautiful record of your intellectual work.

Moreover, we provide writers not only with editorial guidance but also scaffolding for the writing process: each cohort of writers will be given access to Avalon’s private events, including book clubs, writers' retreats, and a conference. We firmly believe writing and thinking together will both elevate the quality of your pieces and bring an aesthetic and intellectual continuity to the quarterly issue as a whole. It will also be a very fun time.

Writers receive a small honorarium, as well as writer copies of the print issue at the launch party.

Pitching

If you’re interested in writing for the Avalon Quarterly, please submit a 200-600 word pitch to editors@avalon.institute, describing your thesis, the authors or experiences with whom you’ll be in conversation, and the rough development of your argument. Please also provide a writing sample (or several, if so inclined). If you’re pitching poetry or a fiction piece, please provide a first draft in lieu of a pitch. The deadline for submissions is September 7th for nonfiction, and September 14th for fiction and poetry.

We’re very interested in publishing new writers who might not have a portfolio of published work. If this applies to you, please pitch your ideas without a writing sample, and we’ll work together to see if you’re a good fit.
